How to Build an Effective Schedule

Notice how well your student works with individual subjects. The best schedule for your student is unique to them. Does your student get excited each day about a core subject area, or perhaps a project they are working on? Engage your students early by starting with a subject your student enjoys, or starting the day by connecting through a read-aloud book, or through a shared learning experience in science or other interactive learning task.  Balance your student’s excitement with learning tasks that might be difficult. Schedule in breaks each hour. For younger students, focus on a task for 20-40 minutes and then take a small break. Parents can also create natural transitions that produce a break by creating movement, and reorganization of materials and the your student’s working space.
